ICET Supervisor Eligibility
There are two prerequisites for trainers to become an ICET Supervisor:
- The trainer must identify an available 2-year funded post in a clinical site offering protected time for the ICET programme.
- The Trainer must have the medical education expertise to supervise a research project to MD level or the trainer must identify a suitable Research Advisor in medical education within the affiliated academic institution to co-supervise.
The first step of the process involves designing a quality ICET post and research proposal. Trainers who have identified a potential ICET post at their site should submit proposals to RCPI via the application form during the annual recruitment cycle. Proposals are reviewed, selected and approved by the ICET Committee.
ICET Post Eligibility
ICET Posts are identified by the applicant/proposed ICET Supervisor and should meet the following criteria:
- Funded post available for 2 years (SpR salary)
- Protected time for research
- Opportunities for lecturing/teaching/assessing postgraduate trainees
- On-site opportunities to develop educational initiatives
- Protected time to attend RCPI ICET Workshops
- Protected time for courses and conferences as outlined in the ICET curriculum
- Dedicated supervision and ongoing feedback to achieve the ICET curriculum outcomes
- No clinical commitment except if needed to maintain clinical skills
Research Proposal
ICET trainees are expected to conduct research to a level of Medical Doctorate (MD) in the field of Clinical Education. Proposed ICET Supervisors should provide an overview of the MD research proposed for the ICET post along with details of the partnering academic institution for the MD at the time of application for ICET.
Where the proposed ICET Supervisor does not have the medical education expertise to supervise a research project to MD level, a Research Advisor must be identified and an overview of their relevant medical education experience/expertise provided with the application for ICET.
