Irish Clinician Educator Training

This ICET Post will be located at St Vincent’s University Hospital and overseen by ICET Supervisor, Dr Aisling O’Riordan. Dr O’Riordan is a Consultant Nephrologist and Associate Professor and UCD Intern Tutor.

The partnering academic institution for the post is University College Dublin, and the Research Advisor is Prof Suzanne Donnelly, UCD Associate Dean for Programmes and Educational Innovation.

The ICET Trainee will perform the role of the UCD Intern Lecturer as part of this ICET Post. Primary responsibilities include:

• Organising a lecture programme for the interns over the year
• Delivering lectures and presentations
• Addressing any issues arising for interns with regard to their posts/training
• Recruiting and liaising with lead interns throughout the year
• Escalating any significant issues e.g. to occupational health/human resources
• Liaising with the UCD intern network co-ordinator and their counterpart in the Mater Hospital
• Reviewing intern assessment reports
• Helping to organise UCD intern induction and shadowing weeks
• Participating in simulation training
• Carrying out service development projects and initiatives for the intern programme

Additional opportunities to develop educational initiatives are available and suggestions from the Trainee will be welcomed.

The proposed research project for this ICET Post will centre on evaluation of the intern training curriculum to drive quality improvement in future intern education.  The curriculum framework for the internship programme in Ireland was published in 2023. This details a number of core competencies to be achieved during the year, including a model of entrustable professional activities. This project will involve an educational needs assessment of the current intern training programme. We aim to map any needs identified to the curriculum framework and evaluate how to deliver the various learning objectives e.g. lectures, tutorials, simulation training.  We will also evaluate how to set standards when assessing intern core competencies.

This ICET Post will be located at Connolly Hospital and overseen by ICET Supervisor, Dr Tommy Kyaw-Tun. Dr Kyaw-Tun is a Consultant Endocrinologist and Senior Lecturer (RCSI).

The partnering academic institution for the post is the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, with Dr Kyaw-Tun supervising research.

The ICET Trainee will have ample opportunities for teaching, lecturing and assessment via engagement with medical students based on site at Connolly Hospital. Connolly Hospital currently hosts the following:

• All RCSI graduate entry medicine students in Year 2
• Clinical placements of medical students from other years e.g. Year 3 and Year 5
• Physician associates

In addition, the ICET Trainee will have the opportunity to work with faculty of the RCSI GEM programme, as well as pursue opportunities for QI projects and more.

The proposed research project for this ICET Post will centre on SpR-Delivered Endocrine Education for Non-Endocrinology & Diabetes Trainees (SPEED).
