Irish Clinician Educator Training

Programme Structure

Semester Structure and Core Components

The ICET programme is structured into four semesters, each semester covers a six-month period and prioritises different activities.

The programme includes six qualitative components:

  • Education Theory
  • Education Practice
  • Research
  • Innovation
  • Leadership
  • Quality Improvement

These components are integrated and all-encompassing during the two years of the programme. However, the organisation of the training/academic activities of the programme may prioritise different components at different stages of the programme.

The following outlines a sample breakdown of the required activities during the ICET programme. Requirements may change in line with agreed individual programmes.

ICET Workshops

Throughout each year of the ICET Programme, RCPI runs a series of ICET Workshops on various topics relevant to the programme. Trainees are expected to actively participate in these workshops. The examples below illustrate the types of workshops typically offered.

Conferences and Courses

Over the course of the ICET Programme, trainees are expected to complete academic courses as outlined in the ICET curriculum. In addition, trainees will attend and present at national and/or international conferences as well as seek opportunities for publication in the field of clinical education.

Required academic courses

  • Becoming a Clinical Educator, Oxford University, UK (Year 1)
  • Quality Improvement in Action, RCPI (Year 1)
  • Advanced Assessment Masterclass, RCSE or any other equivalent course on Assessment as approved by the ICET Committee (Year 2)

Teaching Activities

Trainees are expected to deliver 20 hours of teaching every six months.

Taught Programme Tutors

The Taught Programme is a formal education programme for BST and HST to incorporate current topics delivered in tutorials, study days and mandatory courses. ICET Trainees assume the Clinical Tutor Role within the Taught Programme as part of the teaching requirements of the ICET curriculum.

Research

Trainees are expected to conduct research to a level of Medical Doctorate (MD) in the field of Clinical Education. MD research must be completed by the end of the ICET programme, but it is not expected that the MD will be awarded by the timeframe of the programme.

Where candidates have already completed an MD or PhD, the educational research component of the ICET programme will be determined in accordance with programme requirements and by collaboration between the candidate supervisor and the ICET Committee.

ePortfolio

All trainees are registered on the RCPI ePortfolio system for the ICET programme and are expected to fulfil all requirements relating to the management of yearly training records.

The ePortfolio allows trainees to build up evidence to inform decisions on their progress at the Mid-Year and End of Year Evaluations as well as providing tools to support and identify further education and development opportunities. Trainees must keep an up-to-date ePortfolio throughout their ICET programme.

All ICET trainees will develop an Educational Portfolio upon completion of the ICET Programme.
