RCPI’s Faculty of Public Health Medicine publishes position paper on Cancer Screening

Royal College of Physicians of Ireland’s Faculty of Public Health Medicine has published a position paper on Cancer Screening, outlining the Faculty’s opinion on the cancer screening programmes in place in Ireland.

At present, screening programmes are in place for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer. Population screening for these cancers is appropriate, based on scientific evidence of the benefits of screening.

This position paper outlines the criteria which should be fulfilled before a screening programme is introduced. It also highlights the need for continuous quality assurance and examination of scientific evidence relating to both existing and new screening programmes.
