Six Honorary Fellows were admitted to the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and Faculty of Paediatrics on the evening of 13 June 2019 as part of this year’s Europaediatrics Congress held at the Convention Centre, Dublin.
The Europaediatrics Congress takes place every two years and this flagship event brings together paediatricians and child health professionals from all around the world. This year the Congress is hosted by the Faculty of Paediatrics of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland with the theme of ‘Prevention and therapeutic innovations in the management of child health’.
Professor Errol Alden, Professor Leyla Namazova-Baranova, Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Dr Aman Pulungan, Dr Kuling Shen and Professor Yonghong Yang received Honorary Fellowships.
RCPI President Professor Mary Horgan paid tribute to the Honorary Fellows, acknowledging their contributions to the fields of paediatric medicine, advocacy and research.

Prof Errol Alden - Professor Errol Alden is a distinguished paediatrician and a neonatologist, President Elect of the International Paediatric Association and Professor of Pediatrics Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Maryland USA. He is actively involved with the American Medical Association, the International Pediatric Association Foundation, the Academic Pediatric Association, and the American Pediatric Society. He was CEO of the American Academy of Pediatrics (2004-2015).
Professor Leyla Namazova-Baranova - Professor Namazova-Baranova is President of the European Paediatric Association and an active member of the International Paediatric Association. She is Director of the Institute of Pediatrics (Russia), established the first Family Center for Vaccination and is Head of the first World Health Organisation Collaboration Center in Pediatrics in Russia. She is an author of over 700 publications (more than 200 in English and in French), Chief Editor of Pediatric Pharmacology and a member of the editorial board of World Journal of Paediatrics, Asian Journal of Pediatric Practice and The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics.
Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta - Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta is President of the International Paediatric Association, Professor and Consultant at the Departments of Paediatrics, Nutritional Sciences and Public Health at The Hospital for Sick Children, the University of Toronto, Canada and at The Aga Khan University, Pakistan. He is Chair in Global Child Health and Policy and Co-Director at the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, Toronto. In addition, he is Professor and Founding Director of Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University, Pakistan. He has greatly contributed to the effective World Health Organisation) and the UN Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health (2016-2030) and was a member of the Independent Expert Review Group appointed by UN Secretary General for monitoring global progress in maternal and child health Millennium Development Goals (2011-2015). He leads large research groups based in Toronto, Karachi and Nairobi.
Dr Aman Pulungan – Dr Aman Pulungan is President of The Asia Pacific Pediatric Association, President of Indonesian Pediatric Society which works closely with the World Health Organisation and UNICEF and the International Paediatric Association, in which he also plays a major role. He is also Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist and Head of Endocrinology division (Child Health department) at Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital and Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia. He is a Past President of the Asia Pacific Pediatric Endocrine Society and established many programmes for patients with endocrine disorders, families and health professionals. He is a member of many organisations including the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology, the International Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrics, Global Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrine Society, and is on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology.
Dr Kuling Shen – Dr Kuling Shen is Professor of Paediatrics and a Consultant Paediatrician at Beijing’s Children’s Hospital, Capital Medical University. She is head of the China National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases at Beijing Children’s Hospital, President of the Asian Pediatric Pulmonary Society, President of the Asian Society for Paediatric Research and Vice President of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association paediatrician brand and Standing Committee member of the International Paediatric Association. She has conducted extensive research and has many peer reviewed publications.
Professor Yonghong Yang - Professor Yonghong Yang is Consultant Pediatrician and a Professor of Paediatrics for Infectious Diseases and Pulmonology in the Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University and the Beijing Pediatric Institute. He is a past Deputy Director of the Beijing Children's Hospital and Beijing Pediatric Institute in Beijing, and immediate past President of The Asian Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Professor Yang established the Laboratory of Microbiology and Immunology at Beijing Children's Hospital and has conducted extensive research. He has many publications in relation to paediatric infectious diseases and led a World Health Organisation project on etiologic and epidemiologic studies of bacterial meningitis in China. In addition, he has coordinated international collaborations with scientists in the US, Sweden, Finland, France, Russia and Korea in the field of bacterial infections in childhood.
