In Memoriam, Prof. John Murphy
The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland mourns the loss of our past president, Professor John Murphy, FRCPI.
A compassionate and dedicated obstetrician, Prof. Murphy earned the respect of colleagues across healthcare and academia. His lifelong commitment to advancing medical education and patient care was evident in his many roles within the College. From founding the Member’s Committee in the late 1970s to serving as Clinical Skills Centre Lead from 2014 to 2021, his contributions were both visionary and enduring.
Prof. Murphy joined the College’s Council in 1988 and went on to serve as Vice President, Dun’s Librarian, Honorary Treasurer, and ultimately President. He was also an active member of the Library Committee, where his passion for knowledge and learning left a lasting mark.
His legacy in obstetrics and gynaecology will continue through the many trainees and physicians he mentored. He championed the development of simulation-based training, oversaw the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment, and fostered partnerships with simulation centres nationwide to ensure access to high-quality facilities.
Dr Suzanne O’Sullivan, Chair of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, reflected on his impact:
“Professor Murphy was an advocate for women’s health and a mentor, trainer, and guide for many of us who followed his path. He saw education as the cornerstone of best practice patient care and spent his career building and sharing knowledge to that end. He was particularly proud of the first course he established at the College, Minimal Access Skills, which has now been running for ten years. On behalf of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, I offer sincere condolences to his wife, Anne, and their family.”
Each year, in honour of Prof. Murphy, the institute awards the John Murphy Medal to an SpR for a piece of work which has been shown to enhance the quality and or safety of patient care through audit or research or a quality improvement project.
Dr Diarmuid O’Shea, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, added:
“Professor Murphy’s passing is a profound loss to the College and to the wider medical community. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to education and clinical excellence shaped the College in countless ways. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, innovation, and compassion that will continue to inspire generations of physicians.”
We extend our deepest sympathies to Prof. Murphy’s family, friends, and colleagues. His contributions will not be forgotten.
